Finding the best car seat for your child

Posted on 26 June 2012

One of the most important automotive accessories that you will purchase as a parent is a car seat. However, when browsing the selection in stores or online, the variety can make the decision a bit overwhelming.

But, buying a car seat doesn't have to give you a headache. Car-safety.org recently published an article that provided some tips on what you should look for when buying this essential item.

Five-point harness
This type of safety system is made of straps or webbing that extend over your baby's shoulders, collarbone, hips and between their legs. Experts agree that this type of safety seat is the most effective at preventing ejection in the event of an automobile accident.

Wide, twist-free straps
The safest car seats are those that have straps that don't twist easily. If you are in an accident, twisted straps that are meant to restrain your little one could cause severe burns and injuries.

Two-piece chest clipsCar seats with two-piece chest clips are much more difficult for babies to detach and twist, thus keeping them secure and safe while riding in the car.

LATCH system
Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) car seats allow you to attach the car seat directly into your car instead of using a seatbelt to keep it in place. This type of safety system is safer and easier to install than traditional car seats.

Side-impact and head protection
Many car seats have a specific type of EPS foam that is used in bicycle helmets and is particularly useful in protecting your baby's head in the event of a car crash.

"Wings" for sleeping and protection
These types of padded wings are very useful in not only keeping your son or daughter's head upright while he dozes off in your vehicle, but also helping to prevent a baby's head from striking hard objects during a side-impact or rear car crash.
