My toddler is having a tantrum! What do I do?!

Posted on 28 August 2012

If you're a parent to a toddler, you're probably used to your little bundle of joy throwing a tantrum. Why is it that these meltdowns always seem to be at the most inopportune times? Either you're in a public place like the grocery store, or you're getting ready to host a dinner party at your house for your boss and coworkers.

The crying, kicking and screaming starts and in the midst of your anger, you've probably done a little screaming yourself. Luckily, a recent article from Parenting.com provides one way that you can conserve your energy and calm your fussy child. The method was championed by Dr. Harvey Karp, author of the popular book "The Happiest Baby on the Block."

Instead of getting angry, Dr. Karp says that you should:

♦ Don't frustrated, get even - Get on the floor and have a tantrum just like your hissy-fit-throwing son or daughter. As Dr. Karp says, you have to "join him in the jungle," and that means relating to him. A toddler isn't going to respond if you speak to him like a small adult. That's why, having an outburst like his is important - it's a language that little John understands.

♦ Watch what you say and how you say it - Dr. Karp says that the whole point or throwing a fit next to your tot is to show him or her that you can empathize with their feelings. It's important to use the same tone, words and language that your child is using. The more you can show you understand why he or she is angry, the better luck you'll have at quieting your lovebug.
