Tips for relieving teething pain

Posted on 04 June 2012

Most parents look forward to the day they see their baby's teeth poking through for the first time. It's a milestone in an infant's life that usually occurs when they are between three and six months old. It also signals that they are no longer a newborn. But, despite how cute those tiny chompers can be, new teeth are often incredibly painful for little ones.

However, instead of getting frustrated, there are some things you can do to soothe your baby's gums, according to Parenting.com. The magazine's website suggests, for example, giving your son or daughter a gum massage. But, before sticking your finger instead of child's mouth, make sure it is clean. Then apply some pressure to your baby's gums and move your finger in a circular motion.

Giving your son or daughter a chilled spoon is also a great way to help decrease inflamed gums. Make sure, however, that you leave the spoon in the refrigerator and not the freezer. Leaving it in the freezer can cause the spoon to stick to your baby's delicate mouth. Keep in mind that this form of relief is best administered before any little chompers appear. The last thing you want is for your son or daughter to chip his or her new teeth by biting the spoon too hard.

Some moms swear that giving a teething baby a chilled washcloth dipped in water or even soaked in breast milk is a great way to relieve pain. Make sure, however, that the cloth isn't frozen and that it is clean.

Finally, if your baby has already started eating solids, try feeding him or her chilled, soft foods like applesauce or yogurt. This simple trick not only helps relieve teething pain, it can also give your baby the delicious nourishment that is so important during the first year.
